We certainly oppose government social programs and government actions that do not comport with the purpose of government. But, it is not necessarily because we don’t think those things should be done by someone.
Tenth Amendment
“The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.”
RESPONSIBILITIES RESERVED TO THE CITIZEN
While it is true that “Charity is no part of the legislative duty of the government,” Citizens do have a duty to care for their families and communities.
We ask all of our members to look for the needs in their own communities and find ways to help those around them. Many communities have private organizations, social clubs, and churches that already have programs in place to assist others in the community. If there are no community assistance resources in your area, consider reaching out to others in your community to assist you in meeting a need.
One way to reduce the size of government is to meet a need to the point that government becomes obsolete in that area. Let’s return government to its limited role by stepping up and taking responsibility for our duty.
“I deem it the duty of every man to devote a certain proportion of his income for charitable purposes, & that it is his further duty to see it so applied as to do the most good of which it is capable.”
Thomas Jefferson – Extract from a letter from Thomas Jefferson to William Rogers and William Staughton, March 2, 1806

“Let your heart feel for the afflictions and distresses of every one, and let your hand give in proportion to your purse; remembering always the estimation of the widow’s mite, but, that it is not every one who asketh that deserveth charity; all, however, are worthy of the inquiry, or the deserving may suffer.”
George Washington, “The writings of George Washington,” 1835
